Tidal, the music streaming and entertainment platform, is collaborating with the New York City-based not-for-profit JazzReach on a 12-episode “Jazz Club” video podcast that launched today (Aug. 22). Hosted and produced by Hans Schuman, JazzReach’s executive and artistic director, the series, according to an announcement, “features in-depth conversations and live-performance segments to introduce viewers to some of the most creative, visionary jazz artists on the world stage today and offer a glimpse into their lives, how they think, what they value, what fuels their creative process, informs their musical sensibilities and inspires their relentless pursuit of artistic self-realization.”
Podcast guests announced thus far include trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard, teenage pianist Joey Alexander, and saxophonist Donny McCaslin.
“Jazz and the brilliant artists who make it so often live on the periphery of the national consciousness, so we couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with Tidal and to have the great privilege of creating engaging, informative content for the platform that’s perfectly in line and consistent with our respective organizational missions and mutual commitment to getting great sounding music into the ears, hearts and souls of as many people as possible!” Schuman said in the press release announcing the podcast.
Shot on location at the William NYC and the Jazz Standard, the podcast’s premiere episode features Blanchard, who scored the soundtrack for Spike Lee’s new film, BlacKkKlansman. In the episode, Blanchard talks about his early years growing up in New Orleans; his first musical experiences and opportunities on the New York scene; touring with drummer/bandleader Art Blakey; his decades-long career as a recording artist, bandleader, and composer; his longtime creative partnership with director Lee; and how he (Blanchard) learned to write film scores.
